Illegal Indian Immigrants: Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has raised serious concerns over the deportation of 104 illegal Indian immigrants from the US, calling it "deeply distressing and humiliating." He moved an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha, criticising the alleged mistreatment of deportees, including reports of them being handcuffed and chained.
On Wednesday, a US military aircraft carrying the deportees landed in Amritsar, Punjab, under tight security. Many of them, originally from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, had entered the US illegally or overstayed their visas. Reports of harsh conditions during deportation have sparked outrage, prompting calls for government intervention.
Gaurav Gogoi Raises Adjournment Motion in Lok Sabha
During the Budget Session 2025, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi moved an adjournment motion in Lok Sabha to discuss the deportation. He described the situation as 'deeply distressing and humiliating' and called for an immediate discussion in Parliament.
According to Gogoi, reports suggest that deportees were handcuffed and chained during their journey, which he claims violates human dignity. He criticised the Indian government’s silence on the matter, stating that it reflects poorly on India’s diplomatic stance on human rights.
“The government must address this issue urgently to prevent further dehumanisation of Indian nationals abroad,” said Gogoi in his motion. He further added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s lack of response to the situation has created an impression of indifference towards the rights of Indian citizens.
Deportees Share Their Ordeal
Several deportees have now spoken to the media about their experience. Jaspal Singh, one of the deportees, shared his traumatic experience with news agency PTI.
“We thought we were being taken to another camp. Then a police officer informed us that we were being sent back to India. We were handcuffed, and our legs were chained. These were only removed when we landed in Amritsar,” Singh said.
Many other deportees expressed similar concerns about the conditions they faced during their removal. Social media was flooded with videos and images claiming that Indians were shackled during deportation. However, the Indian government later fact-checked some of these claims, stating that the viral images were actually of Guatemalan nationals.
Trump Administration’s Crackdown on Illegal Immigration
With Donald Trump back in power, the US has intensified its crackdown on illegal Indian immigrants. The deportation of these individuals is just the beginning, as thousands of Indians living illegally in the US could face similar action in the coming months.
