Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar suspends Congress MP Rajani Patil for filming House proceedings

Congress MP Rajani Patil, has been placed suspended by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar for recording House proceedings. After sharing a video from inside the House showing opposition law makers objecting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the Motion of Thanks on Thursday, the Congress member was suspended.

She stated

“Accusing me like this and straightaway giving me the sternest punishment is not fair. I was deliberately named and I felt humiliated,”

Further stated,

“We stopped PM Modi’s reply, again and again, yesterday which is why they are freaked out. This is their manufactured programme,”

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, expressed a “serious view” on the matter and referred to it as a “unwholesome activity” on her part.

Dhankar said,

“In public domain yesterday, on Twitter, there was a dissemination of a video relating to proceedings of this House…Rajani Ashokrao Patil engaged in this unwholesome activity and what has been seen is a matter that must engage our attention,”

Dhankhar promised that the matter wouldn’t be referred to any outside organisation in order to protect the sanctity of the Parliament.

Dhankar stated,

“Parliament is the ultimate authority for making rules, and no other external agencies will be involved in the investigation, as several other members press the chair to investigate the matter.”

Chairman Dhankhar had earlier requested leaders from all political parties to express their opinions on a subject connected to filming House proceedings while PM Modi was speaking on the Motion of Thanks. The proposal to suspend Patil for the duration of the budget session was adopted.
