Congress President Oath Ceremony: President-Elect Mallikarjun Kharge Pays Tribute To Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi: Veteran politician Mallikarjun Kharge will formally succeed Sonia Gandhi as Congress president after receiving the election certificate and the baton at a ceremony. Kharge defeated Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor in a direct contest after the Gandhis opted out.

Kharge Pays Homage To Mahatma Gandhi

On Wednesday morning, Kharge paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat and also visited memorials of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Laal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi. Congress leaders Ajay Maken, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Anil Chaudhary and Youth Congress chief Srinivas BV, among others, also accompanied the President-elect as they paid floral tributes at the memorial of the Father of the Nation.

“The newly elected Congress president, Kharge ji, reached Rajghat before taking oath today and paid homage to revered Bapu. The path shown by Mahatma Gandhi is guiding not only the Congress, but the country and the world even today,” the Congress said in a tweet in Hindi.

Only Rahul can challenge Modi: Akhok Gehlot

Ahead of oath ceremony of the President-elect, Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday stated that the party wanted Rahul Gandhi as its face as he is the only only who can challenge Modi. However, he added that it was Rahul Gandhi’s wish to have a non-Gandhi President for Congress.

“The leadership that Sonia Gandhi ji led for 22 years will always be remembered. We all had requested her in 1998 to take over as the party president otherwise the party will be shattered. She took the challenge in the interest of the Congress party despite having language issues. After that, she was Congress President for 22 years and the governments were formed in 13 states at that time. She performed very well as a party chief that which no one can forget,” he added.
