Covid: India reports 42,766 new cases, slightly higher than yesterday

India has reported 42,766 new COVID cases today. In the same time span, 308 deaths were recorded during the period, according to the Health Ministry.

Kerala, the epicentre of the disease recorded 29,682 new coronavirus cases, taking the number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 41,81,137. The number of deaths increased to 21,422 with 142 new deaths.

Amid the spike in Covid-19 cases in Kerala, the state will continue with its night curfew and Sunday lockdowns. Only essential services were allowed in the state as police carried out strict enforcement of lockdown rules.

Maharashtra contributed 4,130 cases and 64 deaths to India’s daily numbers. In a major development, Delhi reported zero Covid deaths for the fourth straight day on Saturday, according to the data shared by the city health department.

Active cases stand at 1.24% of total cases, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate stands 97.42 per cent, the Union Health Ministry said. The daily positivity rate now stands at 2.45 per cent.

The cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country crossed the 68 crore mark. More than 71.61 lakh vaccine doses were administered till 7 pm on Saturday. India has been running the largest vaccination drive against COVID-19 since January 16 this year.

The global coronavirus caseload has topped 220 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.56 million and vaccinations soared to over 5.42 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
