Covid update: India overall toll crosses 3 crore

India has reported 50,848 new COVID-19 cases and 1,358 deaths in a 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning. With the latest addition, India’s overall tally of Covid-19 crossed 3 crore mark. India’s Covid-19 toll had crossed 2 crore mark on May 8.

 In the last 24 hours 68,817 patients were listed as having recovered from the infection, taking the total recoveries to  2.89 crore.

The Health Ministry said that a total of 29,46,39,511 people have been vaccinated so far in the country, including 54,24,374 who were administered vaccines in the last 24 hours.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, 39,59,73,198 samples have been tested up to June 22 for Covid-19. Of these 19,01,056 samples were tested on Tuesday.

Covaxin makers Bharat Biotech on Tuesday said that there vaccine is 77 per cent effective against novel coronavirus in the phase 3 trials.

The government on Tuesday said that schools will reopen only when a significant population of the country is inoculated against the virus.

 The Centre has alerted and advised Maharashtra, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh regarding the Delta Plus variant of SARS-CoV-2, currently a variant of concern (VOC), which has been found in some districts of these states.

The ‘delta’ variant of the virus is the greatest threat to the United States’ effort to eradicate COVID-19 within its borders, infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci said yesterday. “Transmissibility is unquestionably greater” when compared to the original strain, he said, adding that “it is associated with an increased disease severity”.

India reports 40 cases of Delta Plus variant of the novel coronavirus, most of the cases are from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It is still a variant of interest: ANI
