Covid update: India’s covid-19 tally crosses 45 lakh mark

India registered fresh 96,551 coronavirus cases in last 24 hours, taking the total toll past 4.5 million mark. With 1,209 deaths, the country recorded its highest single day fatalities, according to the data provided by Ministry of Health. The total fatality count in the country now stands at 76,271. While 9,43, 480 are active cases, 35,42,664 patients have recovered from the novel virus.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR), a total of 5,40,97,975 samples have been tested up to 10th September 2020. Of these, 11, 63, 542 samples were tested on Thursday.

Uttarakhand, which initially managed to curb the virus to a great extent, is now seeing continuous surge in covid-19 cases. Including capital city Dehradun, all the hospitals in 13 districts of the state are currently full and unable to admit more patients. Uttarakhand Congress Vice President, Suryakant Dhasmana, has raised the concern at a meeting with State Health Secretary Amit Negi.

As the single daily surge continues, the Centre on Wednesday asked all the states to retest all those found symptomatic negative in rapid antigen tests. The retest are to be done through the more reliable RT-PCR method.

While the health ministry has time and again cited that India’s recovery rate is much better than other nations hit by the pandemic, it is noteworthy that the country’s death toll has risen from 50,000 to 75,000 in just 26 days with an average of 1,000 fatalities per day.

In other news related to coronavirus, world’s most anticipated vaccine developed by AstraZeneca along with Oxford University has been put on hold after its adverse effects on one of the volunteers. However, World Health Organisation have assured that there is nothing to be panicked about as such incidents happen during trials.

Meanwhile, the worldwide covid-19 cases have surpassed 28 million and more then 907,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported. United States, India and Brazil have been the worst-affected countries by the pandemic.
