Delhi: Jama Masjid prohibits entry of women except those who visit to offer prayer

Delhi: According to a sign that the Jama Masjid administration posted outside the historic structure, girls are not permitted to enter the mosque, whether they are travelling alone or in groups.
The warning from the administration states, “Jama Masjid mein ladki ya ladkiyon ka akele daakhla mana hai (The entry of a girl, or girls is not permitted in Jama Masjid).”
The Shahi Imam intervened to declare that admittance of women was prohibited except from those who were coming in to give prayers after this notice garnered a lot of criticism.

According to administrative sources, the warnings, which bear no date, appeared a few days ago outside the three main entry gates. It has only now come to our attention, though.

Why was this step taken?

The decision was made, according to Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam, after some “incidents” were reportedly recorded on the grounds of the historic building.

“People are welcome to worship at Jama Masjid because it is a place of worship. However, this area is not intended for girls who come alone and wait for their dates. The limitation is placed on that, “Bukhari stated to the media.

“Any such place, be it a mosque, temple or gurudwara is a place of worship (ibadat ki jagah hai) and there is no restriction on anyone coming for that purpose. Just today, a group of 20-25 girls visited and they were allowed to enter,” Bukhari said.

Head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) calls the decision a breach of women’s rights

Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), referred to it as a breach of women’s rights and said that she’s sending a notice.

“It is completely wrong to ban the entry of women in Jama Masjid. The kind of rights a man has to praying, women also have the same rights. I am issuing a notice to imam of Jama Masjid. Nobody has the right to ban entry of women in this way,” she stated.

Both visitors and devotees go to the monument from the Mughal Empire, built in the 17th century.
