Delhi MCD elections: Another attempt to elect a new Delhi Mayor remained unsuccessful today as the newly elected municipal corporation was dismissed over a change in rules that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) believed will benefit BJP. The House was adjourned without electing mayor for third time in a month.

AAP opposes voting rights for alderman

The corporation meeting was halted after 10 councillors nominated by  Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena were allowed to vote. This irked AAP leaders who cited Delhi Municipal Corporation Act which says nominated members, or aldermen, cannot caste their votes. While AAP has an upper hand in the corporation, a few extra votes for BJP can cause a major change in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor election.

Earlier, 134 AAP councillors and an Independent member wrote to civic body's presiding officer Satya Sharma, saying alderman "should be kept out of the election of mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee." AAP secured a major win with 134 of 250 wards in the first municipal election held in December. The BJP finished second with 104 seats.

'BJP did not want election to be held today'

"They did not want the elections to be held today. We are supporting the BJP's decision to allow the aldermen to vote in the polls. We remained silent in the entire session, the entire event today is recorded in camera and media. Now, we will take this and move to court against the BJP," said AAP leader Sanjay Singh, post the ruckus that erupted at the MCD house on Monday.

"Last time we withdrew our petition against the BJP because by then the dates for mayor polls were approved and the voting rights of aldermen were also not clear whether the nominated members will vote or not but today it is clear, they have illegally given the Voting rights to aldermen. We will move to Supreme court and challenge the BJP's decision," said AAP leader Atishi.
