Delhi MCD Elections: After two unsuccessful attempts, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to hold election for mayor for the third time on February 6, Monday. AAP has announced Shelly Oberoi as its mayor candidate, while BJP has put Rekha Gupta’s name forward. The post of mayor sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis. The nominees for the post of deputy mayor are — Aaley Mohammad Iqbal (AAP) and Kamal Bagri (BJP).

If the poll successfully take place today, Delhi will get a mayor for the city as a whole after a gap of 10 years. The first two sessions — held on January 6 and January 24 — were forced to be adjourned after both the parties displayed acrimonious exchange. After BJP staged a protest outside the house, AAP leaders joined in which later created ruckus, leaving many injured.

Dy CM Manish Sisodia attacks BJP

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, Monday, alleged that the BJP is deliberately not letting the mayor elections happen. He said that the party has directed its councillors to disrupt the proceedings of the house and not let the election process complete.

"The BJP has instructed its councilors not to allow the mayoral election to be held again in the MCD meeting today. BJP councilors have been told to create ruckus on any pretext as soon as the house starts. Like last time, the house will be adjourned indefinitely again. LG will again give date after 20 days," he said in a tweet in Hindi.
