Delhi – NCR News: Centre’s GRAP Action Plan Kicks In Today – Here’s What You Need to Know!

Commencing today, the Center's Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to combat air pollution in Delhi will come into effect. These recent modifications introduce stringent restrictions as part of the plan.

Delhi – NCR News: Today, the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a series of measures aimed at combating air pollution during the winter season in the Delhi-NCR region, have been enforced in Delhi-NCR region. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), an independent entity responsible for enhancing air quality in Delhi and its surrounding regions, introduced significant modifications to GRAP in the previous year. Furthermore, CAQM recently updated GRAP once more in July of this year.

Limitations on vehicles and other items

The recent revisions encompass stringent limitations on the operation of vehicles exceeding their designated age limits, as well as a comprehensive prohibition on the utilization of firewood and coal in eateries, restaurants, and hotels. These restrictions are activated when the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpasses the 200 threshold.

Per the latest adjustments, once the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi and surrounding areas, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar, reaches a level exceeding 400, the immediate prohibition of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers will be implemented.

The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for the National Capital Region (NCR) is categorized into four distinct stages, reflecting deteriorating air quality levels in Delhi:

  1. Stage I – ‘Poor’ (AQI 201-300)
  2. Stage II – ‘Very Poor’ (AQI 301-400)
  3. Stage III – ‘Severe’ (AQI 401-450)
  4. Stage IV – ‘Severe Plus’ (AQI >450)

What happens in the later stages?

Under Stage 3 conditions, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh will be required to implement stringent restrictions on the operation of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in the national capital and its neighboring areas, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar. In accordance with the recommendations of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), educational institutions may need to suspend in-person classes for students up to Standard 5 under these circumstances.

Furthermore, when the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds 450, non-Delhi registered four-wheelers, excluding electric vehicles (EVs) and those using CNG and BS-VI diesel, will not be allowed to enter the national capital. However, vehicles transporting essential goods or providing essential services will be exempt from this restriction. It’s important to note that all other pre-existing measures specified in different stages of the GRAP will remain in effect.
