Delhi News: Clashes broke out between Delhi police personnel and workers of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after a demolition exercise was carried out.
What’s The Latest Update About This Delhi News?
Following Delhi High Court orders, MCD started the demolition drive at a land adjoining the Syed Faiz Elahi mosque and graveyard at Turkman Gate.
During the drive, a few residents started throwing stones at the MCD and police officials after which the police retorted to tear gas.
Police said 5 policemen sustained injuries after around 25-30 people threw stones at them. It was added that a dispensary and a banquet hall were demolished.
Senior police officer Nidhin Valsan said Delhi Police would be taking strict action against individuals who were involved in incidents of stone pelting. He added that 5 accused were detained while many were identified using more than 100 videos.
Why Was The Demolition Drive Carried Out?
The action by MCD was taken after the Delhi High Court gave a verdict in November 2025. The Court granted MCD three months and the Public Works Department (PWD) to effectively clear approximately 38,940 sq. ft of encroachments near Turkman Gate at the Ramlila Ground. It was then declared by the MCD that all structures beyond 0.195 acres of land would be demolished. Interestingly, the 0.195-acre land houses the mosque.
