Delhi has logged 5,100 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, which is its biggest single-day Covid figure this year. The sharp rise in cases comes as over a lakh tests were conducted in the national capital in a day for the first time.

Delhi had reported 3,548 cases on Monday, 4,033 cases on Sunday, 3,567 cases on last Saturday and 3,594 cases on Friday.

According to the Delhi government, out of 1,03,453 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, 69,667 were the gold-standard RT-PCR tests.

The designated containment zones have also increased accordingly and reached 3,291, the health bulletin showed.

The surge in daily cases recorded – up from Monday’s 3,548 – comes as the authorities decided to ramp up the testing and tracing strategy in a bid to contain the rising infections.

Earlier in the day, Delhi government imposed a night curfew that will be in place every day from 10pm to 5am in the wake of the rising Covid-19 cases in the national Capital.

Essential services and emergency movement of vehicles, however, will be allowed.

“Night curfew imposed in Delhi from 10 PM to 5 AM with immediate effect till 30th April, in the wake of COVID19 situation,” the Delhi government said in a statement.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had on Friday said that Delhi was undergoing the fourth wave of COVID-19 but a lockdown was not being considered yet.
