Delhi to submit proposal on lockdown today

New Delhi: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi is scheduled to submit a proposal on lockdown and its modalities to the Supreme Court on Monday, in view of the rising air pollution in the city.

The development comes days after the apex court had asked the central and city government-led by Arvind Kejriwal to take immediate steps to improve the air quality in Delhi and suggested measures such as stopping vehicles and clamping a lockdown in the national capital.

With the onset of winters, Delhi’s air quality has plunged to hazardous levels every year due to stubble burnings, emissions from transport, coal-fired plants outside the city and other industries, as well as open garbage burning and dust.

All schools in Delhi will remain shut for a week starting from November 15. Schools in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Jhajjar will also remain closed till November 17.

Apart from emergency services, all government offices in Delhi will work from home, starting from tomorrow. Haryana government has also urged offices to switch to work from home mode as much as possible.

According to the forecast, the air quality may improve a little over the next two days in Delhi because of the ban on construction activities.
