The ongoing controversy surrounding Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s comments on Sanatana Dharma has taken a new turn as Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader, Sekar Babu, has addressed the issue. Babu emphasized that the DMK welcomes all Hindus and supports followers of Sanatana Dharma, clarifying the party’s stance.

Support for Sanatana Dharma Followers
Minister Sekar Babu stated that the DMK does not oppose those who adhere to Sanatana Dharma. However, he pointed out that certain principles within Sanatana Dharma, such as restrictions on women’s education, ‘sati pratha,’ and ‘kula kalvi,’ are not in line with progressive values. He expressed the DMK’s commitment to promoting unity among people and eliminating untouchability, aspects that the party finds problematic within Sanatana Dharma. Despite these reservations, Babu reiterated that the DMK welcomes Hindus wholeheartedly.

Babu also responded to criticism from Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai, asserting that he had chosen to engage in the Sanatana debate due to a lack of other criticisms against the state government. He challenged Annamalai’s understanding of ‘sati’ and accused him of being confused and unable to connect with the Tamil Nadu population. Babu argued that Annamalai’s padayatra had not been successful, prompting him to focus on the Sanatana debate.

Minister Sekar Babu highlighted the DMK’s commitment to inclusivity by noting that the party recently certified 93 priests from various castes, including three women.

These comments from Minister Sekar Babu come in the wake of an FIR filed against Udhayanidhi Stalin in Mumbai over his remarks on Sanatana Dharma. Stalin had criticized Sanatana Dharma, blaming it for promoting division and discrimination among people. This controversy has ignited a broader debate on religious and cultural issues in Tamil Nadu.
