In Hinduism, the tradition of celebrating Vijayadashami or Dussehra as a symbol of the victory of good over evil has been going on for years. According to the belief, on this day Shri Ram killed the tyrant Ravana. Since then people celebrate Vijayadashami every year on the tenth day of Shukla Paksham of Ashwin month. The effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnath are burnt on this day.
Vijayadashami falls on the next day of Durga Navami. This festival marks the victory of Shri Ram over King Ravana of Lanka. The ten heads of Ravana represent ten types of evils. These ten heads of Ravana represent lust, attachment, ego, jealousy, greed, fear, inertia, hatred, pride, anger. The word Dussehra is derived from the Sanskrit words Dasha and Hara. Dasha means ten, which represents Ravana and Hara means to be defeated. Lord Rama had uprooted the pride of Ravana and defeated him in the war. Also on this day Maa Durga also killed the demon Mahishasura.
