Election Commission launches digital version of voter identity card

On occasion of national voters day, the Election Commission of India Monday launched the digital/electronic version of the voter identity card.

The Election Commission came into being on January 25, 1950, just a day before India became a republic country. Now since years years, January 25 is being observed as ‘National Voters’ Day.

People will no longer need to go to their village, area to vote in MP-MLA elections. The Election Commission of India is working on a scheme, after which people will be able to vote for their native places even while living in the city.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that Election Commission India has named this project as Remote Voting Project. For this, mock trials will be started across the country soon.

Physical voter ID card takes time to print and reach the voter. For fast delivery of voter ID and easy access of voters, a downloadable voter ID card is being brought. Aadhar card, PAN card, driving license are already available in digital mode for citizens.

Feature of e-EPIC

  • It will be available in PDF format, it cannot be edited.
  • In the first phase from January 25 to January 31, only new voters can download it, who applied to get their new voter ID card.
  • From next month, anyone can download their voter ID card online.
  • Hard copies of the voter card will also be provided to the new voter card holders.
  • Digital voter card can be saved in DigiLocker.
  • The digital voter card will be protected with a QR code.

First phase from 25 to 31 January

In the first phase from 25-31 January, all new voters who have applied for Voter-ID card and registered their mobile numbers in Form-6, can only download their e-EPIC by verifying their mobile number. This mobile number should be unique and should not be registered in ECI voter list first.

The second phase will start on February 1

The second phase will start from February 1, which will be open to general voters. People who have given their mobile numbers can download their e-EPIC. With the coming of this system, there will be no problems like delay in voter card, loss of card and non-receipt of voter ID card. It said that most of the ID cards are moving on digital platforms. In fact, its goal is to provide voters with digital technology in the digital era.
