Farmers Protest: A fourth round of negotiations between the government and the farmers demonstrating at the Punjab-Haryana border is scheduled for this Sunday in an attempt to resolve the impasse over their demands, which include enacting legislation securing the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Farmer Leaders Converge for Crucial Talks with Union Ministers
In Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, farmer leaders will meet with Union ministers Arjun Munda, Piyush Goyal, and Nityanand Rai at 6:00 p.m. Three major problems remain unresolved despite agreements being reached on a number of minor matters during the three previous sessions of discussions earlier this month.
The leaders of the farmer organisations requested yesterday that the government draft an ordinance providing a legal guarantee for MSP, which they claimed might eventually be made into a law. Sarwan Singh Pandher, the leader of the farmers, even voiced optimism that they would receive “good news” following the meeting on Sunday.
Swaminathan Commission’s Shadow
The farmers requesting the dismissal of police cases, loan waivers, pensions for farmers and farm labourers, and the execution of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations are in addition to a law on minimum support payments (MSP).
Rakesh Tikait, the leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), has also declared rallies across Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday in order to further their demands. The BKU was one of the groups involved in the 2020–21 13-month farmers’ protest. However, this time it is not taking part in the Delhi Chalo march.
Three days prior, at their most recent meeting, the farmers had decided to keep the peace and continue their discussions on Sunday. Since then, there have been no reports of any conflicts between the farmers and the security guards.
Ghazipur and Singhu Blockade
With trollies full of ration that they said would last for months and enable them to carry out their protest till their demands are realised, the farmers started their march to Delhi last Tuesday. Now, layers of barricades have been put up to halt them at the borders of the two states at Shambhu and Khanauri, where they are camping.
Along with Ghazipur, Singhu, and other border points being partially blocked, Delhi has also been militarised. To prevent their tractors and trollies from crossing over, concrete blocks and nails are positioned on the roadway.
