Farmers to hold Mahapanchayat in Lucknow today

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farmers’ unions, is set to hold a mahapanchayat in Lucknow on Monday to press for a law guaranteeing MSP and the sacking of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, whose son is an accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

The gathering, scheduled to be held at Eco Garden in Uttar Pradesh capital, was planned months before Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced repealing the three contentious agri laws.

In a tweet, BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait gave a call to farmers to gather at Lucknow in large numbers. In another tweet, he claimed, “The farm reforms being talked about by the government are false and cosmetic. The biggest reform will be to make a law guaranteeing MSP.”

Meanwhile, farmers and supporters of their stir from different districts of western UP are expected to take part in the mahapanchayat in big numbers.

General secretary, BKU (Asli), Surendra Singh said farmers’ confidence was running high after the announcement of the repealing of three “contentious” farm laws. Therefore, they were expected to attend the mahapanchayat in big numbers, he added.

Moreover, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary also advised farmers in his “Parivartan Sandesh Rally” in Muzaffarnagar on Saturday to keep up the pressure on the government and reiterated that “his party will always back the decisions taken by the farmers”. Farmer leaders are reaching out to people in villages to ensure their good turnout in the Monday’s mahapanchayat.
