In a move to streamline digital toll payments and enhance commuter convenience, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari’s office has released an official FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) update on the recently launched FASTag Annual Pass Scheme.
The new scheme is designed to benefit frequent travelers on National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE) by offering annual toll payment options for eligible vehicle owners. Below are key highlights and clarifications from the official FAQ:
Do I need to buy a new FASTag to avail of the Annual Pass?
No. Existing FASTag users can activate the Annual Pass on their current FASTag, provided:
It is properly affixed on the vehicle’s windshield
It is linked to a valid Vehicle Registration Number (VRN)
It is not blacklisted or inactive
Which toll plazas will accept the Annual Pass?
The Annual Pass is valid only at toll plazas on National Highways and National Expressways.
At toll plazas located on:
State Highways (SH)
Local expressways or municipal roads
—managed by state governments or local bodies—regular toll charges will apply as per the standard FASTag system.
Is the Annual Pass available for all vehicle types?
No. The scheme is exclusively available for private, non-commercial vehicles — specifically Cars, Jeeps, and Vans.
Any attempt to use the Annual Pass on a commercial vehicle will result in immediate deactivation without prior notice.
The Ministry urges vehicle owners to read all eligibility terms before opting into the plan and to ensure their FASTag details are up to date.
This move comes as part of the government's broader push toward digitizing road transport infrastructure, easing congestion at toll plazas, and promoting cashless, contactless travel across India’s highway network.
Motorists interested in the Annual Pass facility are advised to check with their FASTag issuer bank or NHAI's official portal for further instructions on activation and usage.
