For Suriname’s development “Indians contributing economically, socially, culturally”: President Murmu

On Tuesday, President Draupadi Murmu remarked that Suriname is like a mini India and emphasised the vital role Indians have had in shaping Suriname’s culture, society, and economy.

She met Suriname residents of Indian descent during a gathering where Chandikaprasad Santokhi, the president of Suriname, was also present.

President Draupadi Murmu noted in her remarks to the audience that it is a source of pride for us that Indians have attained the highest positions in Suriname.

“My first state visit after assuming office is to Suriname. It is a privilege for me to be part of the celebration of 150 years of the arrival of Indians in Suriname. It is a matter of pride for us that Indians have reached the highest positions in Suriname. Indians have been contributing significantly to the development of Suriname economically, socially and culturally,” she said.

The objective of the Indian government, according to her, is to establish long-lasting ties with all of its allies. “Today India is moving fast towards development, India has always been ahead in helping its friendly countries regarding vaccines and medicines,” she added.

A two-minute of silence was observed before the community gathering to pay tribute to and pray for the 278 individuals who sadly perished in the Balasore railway tragedy in Odisha on June 2.

Chandrikapersad Santoki, the president of Suriname, declared during his speech that his country would continue to enhance its 47-year friendship with India.

“We are celebrating 150 years of Indian coming to Suriname, we are overwhelmed to wholeheartedly welcome the President of India on this occasion. We will further strengthen the 47 years of relationship between Suriname and India, and will further strengthen cultural and social-religious ties. Despite the distance of thousands of kilometres, a mini India resides in Suriname. Our relations have become stronger after Draupadi Murmu ji’s visit. I say thanks on behalf of the people of Suriname,” he said.

Along with her colleague from Suriname, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, Droupadi Murmu presented floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue earlier in the day in Paramaribo’s Knuffelsgracht.

“Remembering the lasting legacy of Mahatma. President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn & President @CSantokhi of Suriname paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi in Paramaribo,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted.

In Suriname, President Droupadi Murmu arrived to the Lalla Rookh Museum. On the third day of her trip to Suriname, the President paid a visit to the Vishnu Mandir.
