Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally accepted the invitation to attend the next G7 Summit to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta in Canada, from June 15 to 17. Modi tweeted his gratitude on X (when it was named Twitter): “Was happy to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulations on your recent election victory & thanks for the invitation to the G7 in Kananaskis at the end of June. He then said,” As two vibrant democracies linked by family ties, India and Canada cannot afford to wait any longer to meet the challenges of the future.”We have to work together with new zeal, guided by mutual respect and mutual interests. See you at the Summit.”
The incident is the first move by both governments over the past three years, since relations between both countries turned sour in 2023 following a claim made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had dismissed these claims as “absurd and baseless,” setting off a diplomatic freeze and a downgrading of relations between the two countries.
The decision by the Indian Prime Minister to accept the invitation, despite earlier speculation that travel logistics, security, and the current strained environment might stymie his participation, is indicative of an openness on his part to engaging with the continent and with common challenges.
The G7 Summit, which is taking place at a time when the world is facing a great number of challenges relating to global financial stability, climate change, and global security, and in which India is participating as a guest country, reflects India’s increasingly important role on the global stage.
