Gautam Gambhir: The record of Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir is quite impressive in the white ball format. Since his joining, team India has won an ICC and ACC trophy. However, his record is not the same when it comes to test cricket.
News has now emerged that someone in the cricket board had informally approached cricket great V V S Laxman to find out if he would be interesting in coaching India in the red ball format.
What was Laxman’s Reply?
It is learnt that the legendary batsman from Hyderabad refused to take on the coaching job. Laxman is believed to be happy working as the ‘Head of Cricket’ at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
It is believed that these discussions happened after India lost 0-2 to South Africa. This was team India’s second home whitewash in the last one year.
This was the second occasion when the BCCI send an expression of interest to Laxman. Last year, Laxman was asked of his interest in coaching team India when the tenure of Rahul Dravid was coming to an end and before Gambhir emerged as the contender.
When Will The Contract Of Gautam Gambhir End?
The contract of Gautam Gambhir with BCCI will run until the end of the ODI World Cup in 2027. However, BCCI may possibly want to hire someone else as the red ball coach for the remaining 9 tests of the WTC 2025-27 cycle.
India is expected to play Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia next in the test cricket format.
Many in the cricket fraternity are not happy at how Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar have been handling things. For instance, the exclusion of Shubhman Gill from the T20 World Cup Squad had the footprints of Gautam Gambhir written all over it. This has led many in the team to believe that their place is not safe if the next poster boy of Indian cricket can be ruled out just like that.
