George Soros: In a rare stance of unanimity, the Bharatiya Janata Party and main opposition, Congress, came out in defence of the nation’s electoral process after US billionaire-philanthropist George Soros said India had a ‘democratic revival,’ in the wake of Hindenburg Research report.
BJP hits out at George Soros
Union minister Smriti Irani Friday accused Soros of seeking to demonise India’s democracy and bring an onslaught on the country’s economy for his personal gains.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Smriti Irani said, “The man who broke the Bank of England and is designated by a nation as an economic war criminal has now expressed his desire to break the Indian democracy. As you know George Soros an international entrepreneur who hedges bets against many countries has now declared his ill intentions to intervene in the democratic processes of India.”
Congress leader slams George Soros’ remarks
Congress general secretary in-charge of communication, Jairam Ramesh in a tweet said, “Whether the PM-linked Adani scam sparks a democratic revival in India depends entirely on the Congress, Opposition parties & our electoral process. It has NOTHING to do with George Soros.”
US short-seller Hindenburg on January 24 released a report where it claimed “brazen accounting fraud” and “stock manipulation” by the Gautam Adani-led group. Adani thrashed the report calling it “unresearched” and “maliciously mischievous”, but it triggered a massive rout of Adani Group stocks.
Rahul Gandhi, during his first appearance in the Parliament after the Bharat Jodo Yatra, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his connection with Adani amid the Hindenburg report.
Many other opposition leaders have also raised the issue in the parliament.
