A 6-year-old Indian origin girl becomes a recent victim of racism against Indians in Western countries. This time, the incident happened in Ireland when a group of local teenagers, aged between 8 and 14, attacked the girl while she was playing on the ground in Waterford City, southeast Ireland.
The local children’s attacks on the girl with the slogan ‘Go back to India’ show that racism is spiking against Indians, and even the children are not getting spared. This fresh incident is definitely a cause of concern for every Indian, especially those who are living abroad.
Racist Attack on Indian-Origin Girl In Ireland
The incident, now getting global attention, is shared by News 18 editor Rahul Shivshankar on his X handle. On August 4, the little girl, Nia Naveen, was playing outside of her house when a gang of 5 children attacked her. They call her ‘dirty Indian’ and ‘go back to India’. The attackers are mainly boys aged between 12 and 14, with a girl aged 8, who were locals.
They punched at Nia’s face, neck, and twisted her hair. One even hit her private parts with a bicycle wheel. Nia’s mother, Anupa Achuthan, belongs to the Kottayam region in Kerala. She is a nurse and has been living in Ireland for the past eight years. She and her husband recently got Irish citizenship.
Netizens’ Reaction to the Racist Incident
People noting this racist attack are utterly shocked by the fact that it is impacting even the psychology of children. It is also shocking for them that this racist attack happened in Ireland, an apparently peace-loving and welcoming country for Indians. They thus question, “Why suddenly the Irish have become so racist ? Who is fueling their minds against Indians ?“. They are wondering about it, saying, “Never heard Irish ppl being so r@cist“.
People are taking it as a deep-rooted problem in the West and their colonial mindset. One user points out, “Racism is central to Europe as Caste is to us“. People are even suggesting that the NRIs come back to India and develop the economy of their own country.
They say, “Why do they stay there where they are not accepted“. Another user wisely criticises the Indian mentality to go abroad for a better life. He says, “The hard lesson here is, stay back and fix your own country … this illusion of a “running away to a better life abroad” is going to crumble soon ….“
Rising Concerns Over Racism Against India
This recent racist attack against Indians is not a stray event. Recently, we have been witnessing multiple cases of racism against Indians in the country. On July 31, an Indian Data scientist in Dublin suffered facial fractures due to a sudden attack by six teenagers near his apartment. In Early July, a 40-year-old Indian man was beaten and stabbed by teenagers in Tallaght.
After noting these repeated incidents of racist attacks against Indians in Ireland, the Indian Embassy in Dublin issued an urgent safety advisory. The Embassy advises Indian nationals to avoid deserted areas, especially during odd hours, and be vigilant about their safety.
