Good News: For first time, India has more women than men

Very good news has come about women in the country. In fact, for the first time in the country, the population of women has increased in comparison to men. Now there are 1,020 females for every 1000 males. At the same time, this record has also been made for the first time after independence when the population of women has exceeded 1000 as compared to men. Another good news is that the sex ratio at birth has also improved. In 2015-16, it was 919 girls per 1000 children, which has improved to 929 girls per 1000 children in 2019-21.


The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data compares village and city sex ratios. According to the survey, the sex ratio is better in villages than in cities. While there are 1,037 females for every 1,000 males in villages, there are 985 females in cities. Earlier in NFHS-4 (2019-2020) there were 1,009 females per 1,000 males in villages and this figure was 956 in cities.

Good news is coming out about the increasing population of the country. In fact, according to the second phase of the National Family Health Survey-5, the country’s total fertility rate (TFR) or the average number of children a woman gives birth to in her lifetime has come down from 2.2 to 2. Whereas the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) has also increased and has increased from 54 per cent to 67 per cent.
