Gorakhnath temple attack: NIA court hands death sentence to accused Murtaza Abbasi

Gorakhnath temple attack: Murtaza Abbasi was given the death sentence by a special NIA court on Monday for attacking security personnel at the well-known Gorakhnath temple in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate Ahmed Murtaza Abbasi was found guilty by the court on Saturday.

On charges of breaking the UAPA, waging war against the nation, and murderous attack, Murtaza was found guilty by the court.

Abbasi attempted to forcibly enter the Gorakhnath temple grounds on April 3 of last year, and while doing so, he used a sickle to strike the security guards stationed there, injuring two Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) constables. The security guards overcame him, which led to his detention. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad performed the case investigation (ATS).

Security officials were alarmed by the incident since Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has his apartment on the premises of the temple where he serves as head priest.

After the accused’s detention, the strict Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) was employed against him.

“He conducted a lone wolf fatal attack at the southern gate of Gorakhnath temple and attempted to snatch the rifle of security officials on duty. His intention was to conduct a big operation after snatching the weapon,” ANI had quoted Kumar as saying.

Abbasi was supporters of terrorist organisation Islamic State

Abbasi was in touch with the militants and supporters of the terrorist organisation Islamic State, according to Prashant Kumar, additional director general of police (Law and Order), Uttar Pradesh Police.

Police claimed that after stealing guns from the security guards, the suspects wanted to carry out a significant operation.

“He was arrested by Bengaluru Police in 2014 for being in connection with ISIS propaganda activist Mehdi Masroor Biswas. He was influenced by terror organisations, radical preachers and ISIS-terrorism promoters,” the ADG had further said.
