The draft notification from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) calls for the mandatory non-renewal of the registration of government vehicles older than 15 years.
According to MoRTH, the same will be valid starting on April 1, 2023.
"It will also be mandatory for buses and vehicles of corporations and transport department to scrap vehicles older than 15 years. The government is seeking suggestions within 30 days," it said.
Nitin Gadkari, a Union minister, also stated on Friday that all government-owned vehicles in India that have reached their 15-year mark will be discarded, and that a policy to that effect has been forwarded to the states.
"Yesterday, I signed a file under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that all the vehicles of the Indian government which have completed 15 years will be scrapped. I have sent this policy of the Indian government to all the states. They should adopt this policy at the state level," he was quoted as saying by a PTI report.

On September 14, Nitin Gadkari announced to establish at least three licenced facilities for automobile recycling throughout the nation. In April of this year, the automobile scrappage policy went into effect.
According to the vehicle scrappage policy, outdated and unfit vehicles must be removed off the road and replaced with new, contemporary models.
On October 29, 2018, the Supreme Court prohibited the use of gasoline and diesel automobiles older than ten years and fifteen years in the nation's capital, even before the announcement of the vehicle scrappage. In 2014, the National Green Tribunal issued an order prohibiting the parking of automobiles older than 15 years in any public space.
