PM Modi said the decision marks a significant step in ensuring that essential items remain affordable for ordinary citizens while discouraging wasteful spending. “This is not just a tax reform, but a people’s reform — a festival of savings for every household,” the Prime Minister declared in his televised speech.

Under the GST reforms, teaching materials, milk, curd, ghee, paneer, and other essential food items have been brought under lower tax slabs, giving families substantial financial relief. Meanwhile, heavy taxation has been imposed on luxury goods, alcohol, and non-essential items to curb unnecessary expenditure and social harm.

Prime Minister also highlighted how the reforms will empower youth by reducing the cost of bikes

The Prime Minister also highlighted how the reforms will empower youth by reducing the cost of bikes, cars, homes, and construction materials like steel and cement. “We want every young Indian to dream big and achieve their goals without financial constraints,” he added.

PM Modi connected the reforms with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India), stressing that economic growth must go hand in hand with social equity. He called upon citizens to join the spirit of Navratri and Vijayadashami by pledging to fight corruption, addiction, and injustice, drawing parallels between these evils and the symbolic burning of Ravana’s effigies.

The Prime Minister’s announcement has already received positive reactions from economists, who say the reform could boost consumption and strengthen the purchasing power of households. Industry leaders also welcomed the move, calling it a “balanced decision” that promotes both social responsibility and economic dynamism.
