Gujarat: Police Takes to Public Flogging After Stone Pelting At A Garba Event, watch video

Gujarat: Police officers in Gujarat's Kheda district tied some Muslim men to a pole and beat them with canes after they were allegedly caught throwing stones at a Navratri Garba event. These videos are currently trending on Twitter. Officers observed cheering crowds as plainclothes police beat the men.

The footage was also posted by the neighbourhood news source VTV Gujarati News, which stated that "10 to 11 heretics were hauled to the village, where the police taught them a lesson in public" at Undhela village.

The police inspector in charge of the region was also there, and the guys were instructed to "apologise to the public," according to the report.

The footage could not be independently verified. Police declined to remark on the whipping right away.

"Kangaroo Justice" or "Fast Fix"? Netizens Debate.

In response to the video, several users on Twitter questioned the police's "kangaroo justice," while many others defended the "fast fix".

How it started?

According to PTI, a mob of about 150 people flung stones at a garba performance held on a temple's grounds last night; 43 persons have been identified in connection with the incident.

Members of the village's Muslim community reportedly objected to the garba being held close to a mosque, which is situated across from the temple, according to the First Information Report, or FIR.

After the FIR was filed at the Matar police station, 13 people were held, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police VR Bajpai, who spoke to PTI. Following the incident, the area saw a heavy deployment of police.

"The sarpanch (leader) of the community had planned a garba at a temple. A Muslim community mob attempted to prevent it from happening "he told reporter Mr. Bajpai.

Rajesh Gadhiya, the superintendent of police in Kheda, had earlier said that a group of individuals entered the Navratri Garba location and "started causing trouble" after being guided by two Muslim guys.

The incident is just one of many when Muslim men are charged with disrupting celebrations. Right-wing Hindu organisations like the Bajrang Dal have advised them against doing so.

In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, five Muslim men were taken from a Garba pandal, but authorities later claimed they had not broken any laws. The men had a dispute with the organisers and the police, the officer said, adding that the arrest was solely made as a precaution.
