Hansraj College in Delhi University stops serving non-veg food; Principal says 90% of students are vegetarian

Hansraj College: Students and hostellers of Hansraj College in the Delhi University will not get non-vegetarian foods in the hostel or canteen anymore. The prestigious DU college has stopped serving non-vegetarian food to students either in the canteen or the hostel as the college resumed offline mode of study after the Covid pandemic.

When asked, College Principal, Professor Rama said that it was not something new. The college had stopped serving non-veg nearly 3-4 years back. He also said the current decision must have been taken after considering the consent of the students.

Principal says it was stopped 3-4 years back

“I don’t remember when exactly the serving of non-veg food was stopped. It was 3-4 years back, but the committee must have had a word with students before taking the decision and then the decision must have been taken to stop serving non-veg food,” said Prof Rama, the Principal.

She also justified the move and said that a majority of students are vegetarians who cannot eat non-veg food items while students who are non-vegetarians, can eat vegetarian food. She further said, “We have stopped non-veg food on campus after Covid; this is the committee’s decision. The ones who want to consume non-veg can go outside the college campus and have it. About 90% of students are vegetarian. The vegetarian student or employee cannot accommodate everybody; they face inconvenience.”

“For example, I don’t smoke, but if someone smokes in front of me, it will bother me. People who want to go out and consume it, they can, that’s their personal choice, but on premises, it’s not allowed,” she said.

A contentious issue

Non-vegetarian food is a contentious issue and last year clashes were reported from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after students owing allegiance to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) allegedly stopped other students from eating non-vegetarian food on the Ram Navami day. The ABVP students were also accused of assaulting the mess secretary of the Kaveri Hostel on the campus.

The ABVP, on the other hand, alleged that left-wing students were interrupting Ram Navami prayers at the Kaveri Hostel.
