Holika Dahan victory of good over evil

The festival of colours Holi is just a day far away, people celebrate Holi with great zeal and enthusiasm across the nation. A day before Holi falls ‘Choti’ Holi, also known as Holika Dahan, holds mighty cultural significance.

Holika Dahan victory of good over evil this day, people gather around a bonfire and pray and perform rituals. Choti Holi will be observed on 28 March, which of course will be followed by Rangwali Holi.

This ritual symbolises the burning of evil into ashes and the triumph of the good. This tradition is associated with Bhakt Prahalad and his demoness aunt, Simhika (also known as Holika). She was an accomplice of Hiranyakashipu (Prahalad’s father), who wanted to avenge his son for worshipping Lord Vishnu. Though she had the powers to endure fire, she ceased to exist as she sat with Prahlad on a pyre to kill him. Prahalad emerged from the fire unscathed while Holika perished.
