How to Change Your Address in an Indian Passport: Step-by-Step GuideNation and People

Keeping your passport up to date ensures smooth travel, quicker verifications, and greater peace of mind.

If you’ve recently moved homes, updating your address on official documents is essential — and your passport is one of the most crucial among them. The Government of India allows citizens to change the address in their passport through a reissue process. Whether you’ve shifted cities or just moved within the same locality, the process is simple and can be done online or offline.

Keeping your passport updated helps avoid issues during:

  • Visa applications or renewals
  • Police verification during passport reissue
  • International travel and embassy verification
  • Document checks for bank KYC, employment, or government procedures

An updated passport ensures smooth verification and travel experiences.

Understanding the Process: Passport Reissue vs Renewal

Many people confuse passport renewal with passport reissue.

  • Renewal is applicable when your passport is about to expire (usually within one year of its validity).
  • Reissue, on the other hand, applies to updates or changes such as a new address, name correction, change in appearance, or lost/damaged passport.

For a change of address, you must apply for passport reissue under “Change in Existing Personal Particulars.”

Step-by-Step Process to Change Your Address in Passport

Step 1: Visit the Passport Seva Portal
Go to the official website: www.passportindia.gov.in.

Step 2: Register or Log In
If you’re a new user, click on “New User Registration” to create an account. Existing users can simply log in with their credentials.

Step 3: Select “Apply for Reissue of Passport”
After logging in, choose “Apply for Fresh Passport/Reissue of Passport.”
Select Reissue, and specify the reason as “Change in Existing Personal Particulars.”

Step 4: Fill Out the Application Form
You can fill the form online or download it to fill offline and upload it later.
Enter your new address details accurately, ensuring they match the proof you’ll provide.

Step 5: Upload Supporting Documents
Attach valid proof of your new address. Commonly accepted documents include:

  • Aadhaar card
  • Electricity or water bill
  • Rent agreement
  • Bank statement or passbook with the new address
  • Employer’s certificate (if applicable)

Step 6: Pay Fees and Schedule an Appointment
Pay the applicable reissue fee:

  • ₹1,500 for a 36-page passport (Normal)
  • ₹2,000 for a 60-page passport (Normal)

Then, schedule an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
