Independence Day 2023: History

India endured 200 years of British colonial oppression, beginning in 1757 after their triumph at the Battle of Plassey, which resulted in their control over the country. Subsequently, the East India Company governed India for a century until the Indian rebellion of 1857 led to direct British rule.

In 1885, India’s political landscape saw a milestone with the establishment of the Indian National Congress, the country’s first political party. Post World War I, in 1918, Indian activists strongly advocated for self-rule or “Swaraj,” marking a pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence.

The British presence in India sparked widespread resentment and uprisings throughout the nation. Consequently, Indian history witnessed numerous retaliations and movements for independence that ultimately compelled the British to leave the country.

In 1929, during a significant meeting in Lahore, the Indian Parliament declared ‘Purna Swaraj’ or full independence for India. After a relentless 190-year struggle, India finally achieved freedom from British rule on August 15, 1947, ending their oppressive regime. Following a series of negotiations between the British government and the Indian Parliament, Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of India before independence accepted the proposal.

Independence Day 2023: 76th or 77th?

India achieved its hard-fought independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, after over two centuries of struggle. Consequently, India celebrated its first year of independence on August 15, 1948, leading to the conclusion that this year marks the 76th anniversary of freedom.

However, considering the total number of Independence Days observed in India since August 15, 1947, the count would be 77, with that date being considered the first. Hence, India will commemorate its 77th year of independence in 2023, and both arguments hold validity.
