India- Canada Relation: Canada Seeks Responsible and Constructive Engagement with India Amid Diplomatic Tensions

India- Canada Relation: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada does not seek to escalate the situation with India and will continue to engage “responsibly and constructively with New Delhi.” This statement follows a diplomatic row that began when Canada expelled an Indian diplomat over the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. Trudeau had previously alleged “credible allegations of a potential link” between Indian government agents and Nijjar’s killing.

Canada Seeks Responsible and Constructive Engagement with India

India, in response, requested Canada to withdraw several dozen diplomats from its missions in the country. Last month, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs cited the need for “parity in strength and rank equivalence” in bilateral diplomatic presence.

During an interaction with journalists in the US, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the importance of addressing violence, threats, and intimidation against Indian diplomats and missions. He questioned whether the world would react differently if such incidents occurred against any other country. Jaishankar also noted that Canada had made allegations and that India was open to examining specifics and relevant information. He emphasized the need to avoid treating isolated incidents without considering the broader context.

This diplomatic tension between Canada and India revolves around allegations and counter-allegations, with both countries expressing concerns about the treatment of their diplomats and missions.
