India COVID-19 vaccination drive achieves 2 billion dose-record

A year after launching the world’s largest coronavirus vaccination campaign, India has reached a significant milestone by administering 2 billion vaccine doses. The country has been attempting to increase vaccination efforts in response to global concerns about new Covid outbreaks. Among Asian countries, Japan has recently seen a significant increase in cases, while France has topped the global dashboard.

PM Modi tweeted shortly after the 200 millionth dose was administered, “India creates history again!” Congratulations to all Indians on reaching the milestone of 200 crore vaccine doses. Proud of those who helped make India’s vaccination drive unprecedented in scale and speed. This has bolstered the international fight against COVID-19.”

“India has set a new record by completing the target of 200 crore vaccinations in just 18 months. Heartiest congratulations to all the countrymen on this achievement,” health minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said in a video address.

Even as India approaches a major milestone, booster dose coverage has been a source of concern. According to the government, only 8% of the country’s total population has received the third shot against Covid so far. To encourage people, a 75-day campaign for free booster shots at government centres was launched nationwide on Friday.
