India has officially launched the e-Passport, marking a major milestone in modernizing the country’s travel documentation system. The new chip-enabled passports are designed to enhance security, speed up immigration processes, and offer greater protection against data tampering and identity theft.
According to officials, the process of applying for an e-passport remains the same as that of a traditional passport. Applicants can apply online through the Passport Seva Portal, submit their biometric data at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK), and complete the verification process as usual.
The key difference lies in the technology — e-passports come with an embedded electronic microchip that stores the holder’s personal information, including name, date of birth, and biometric identifiers such as fingerprints. This data can be authenticated electronically, reducing the risk of forgery and speeding up border checks at international airports.
Who Is Eligible for an e-Passport?
All Indian citizens eligible for a traditional passport can apply for an e-passport. The government has started issuing them in phases, prioritizing diplomatic and official passport holders, with plans to gradually expand availability to the general public.
