India Maldives Row: In the wake of the disparaging remarks made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ali Azim, the leader of the Maldives' parliamentary minority, urged on Monday for actions to be taken to remove President Mohamed Muizzu, including a vote of no confidence.

Democratic Commitment to Foreign Policy Stability

"We, d Democrats, dedicated to upholding d stability of the nation's foreign policy n preventing d isolation of any neighboring country. R u willing to take all necessary steps to remove prez @MMuizzu from power? Is @MDPSecretariat prepared to initiate a vote of no confidence?," the leader wrote on X. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep, a dispute broke out when a number of Maldivian ministers made disparaging comments about him on social media.

Three Deputy Ministers Criticize PM Modi

Three deputy ministers were suspended by the Maldivian government on Sunday due to their criticism of Prime Minister Modi. Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, the deputy ministers in charge of the youth ministry, were suspended, according to sources in the Maldivian media. The Maldivian ambassador to India was called to the External Affairs Ministry on Monday, when the remarks were received with deep concern.

Controversial Remarks Spark Indian Outcry

The ministers' derogatory comments have caused controversy in India, where a number of well-known figures have urged viewers of Channel X to visit their own country rather than travelling to the Maldives. Social media posts purportedly stated that numerous Indians are postponing their planned vacation to the Maldives due to the controversy. According to the Maldivian Foreign Ministry, the government is aware of "derogatory remarks" made against foreign leaders on social media, but the remarks are personal opinions and do not reflect the government's stance.
