In a strong diplomatic signal, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and unequivocally condemned the brutal terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where 25 Indian tourists and a local Kashmiri were gunned down. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin conveyed his deepest condolences and assured India of Russia’s full support in its fight against terrorism.

This high-level communication comes amid controversial remarks from the Pakistani establishment, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently suggesting that Russia, China, or Western countries could step in to investigate the terror incident. Asif's comments, made during an interview with Russian state-run agency RIA Novosti, openly sought third-party intervention to determine "whether India or Modi is lying or telling the truth"—a move seen by Indian observers as a desperate attempt to shift global attention.

In contrast, the Kremlin's statement and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reinforced the longstanding strategic ties between Moscow and New Delhi. “President Putin called PM @narendramodi and strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, India. He conveyed deepest condolences on the loss of innocent lives and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism. He emphasised that the perpetrators and their supporters must be brought to justice,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X.

The two leaders also discussed the future of bilateral cooperation

The two leaders also discussed the future of bilateral cooperation, with Prime Minister Modi extending an invitation to President Putin to attend the Annual India-Russia Summit later this year. Putin accepted the invitation, with both sides underscoring that their relations remain unaffected by external pressures and are "developing dynamically."

This clear alignment between Moscow and New Delhi stands in stark contrast to Pakistan’s flailing diplomatic overtures, which analysts describe as an attempt to internationalize the Kashmir issue under the guise of counter-terrorism.

The Pahalgam attack has reignited global concern over terrorism emanating from the region, and with Russia now publicly aligning with India on the matter, Islamabad finds itself further diplomatically isolated.
