ISRO

ISRO: 2023 will go down in space exploration history as the year the Indian space agency made history by achieving a number of ground-breaking firsts. ISRO ended India's long fatigue brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, multiple lockdowns, and heartbreaking failures. It also demonstrated India's technological prowess with the first-ever soft landing on the Moon's south polar region and the country's first solar mission.

India's Historic Lunar South Pole Landing

With the Chandrayaan-3 mission, India made history on August 23, 2023, when it became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft on the Moon's unexplored south polar region. This enormous accomplishment served as both a source of inspiration for a country that has long aspired to be among the elite in space exploration and a monument to Isro's engineering prowess. Following the United States, the Soviet Union, and China as the only other nations to have accomplished a soft landing on the Moon, India became the fourth nation to do so after years of painstaking planning and execution.

Technology Demonstration and Scientific Discoveries

In addition to landing, Isro's Chandrayaan-3 mission also conducted technology demonstration experiments, such as hopping on the Vikram Lander and shifting the Propulsion Module from lunar orbit to Earth orbit. Several scientific findings were produced by the mission's payloads, including the first temperature-depth profile of the lunar south polar region and the confirmation that sulphur exists on the Moon. Isro, however, had goals beyond reaching the Moon.

Less Than Two Weeks After the Moon Landing, India Reaches for the Sun

Less than two weeks after the lunar success, Isro launched Aditya-L1, the first space-based solar observatory in India. The goal of this mission is to learn more about the Sun's corona, which is its outermost layer. This will have a significant impact on space weather forecasting. An important step towards launching an Indian into space was taken by the Indian space agency. India was headed in the right direction, as demonstrated by the Gaganyaan mission's first flight test. India also became a member of the US-led, far-reaching Artemis Accords in 2023, opening the door for the sharing of information, discoveries, and resources related to the Moon mission.

Opening Doors to a New Era of Space Exploration

With the implementation of the new space policy in 2023, Isro also opened its doors to private industry players, offering its expertise to startups operating in the field. Within Agnikul Cosmos' compound, Isro assisted Agnikul Cosmos in opening the first private launch facility, while Skyroot Aerospace works on developing an orbital-class rocket. By launching the OneWeb satellite constellation into orbit, the space agency additionally profited from the private launch industry. The nation's space-tech ecosystem was further strengthened by the partnership with Microsoft, which was signed on January 5th, to support space-tech startups in India. Furthermore, the Reusable Launch Vehicle prototype (RLV-TD) made a major advancement towards sustainable space travel with its successful autonomous landing test.

Proof That Greatness Can Be Achieved With Limited Resources

Even though Isro operates with a budget far smaller than that of its international counterparts, its achievements in 2023 have been astounding. The company has proven that low-cost space missions are not only feasible but also capable of producing valuable scientific data and technological breakthroughs. The world watches with anticipation as Isro gets ready for upcoming missions, such as the X-ray Polarimeter Satellite and the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. Undoubtedly, 2023 has been a historic year for Isro, establishing a new standard for what can be accomplished with ingenuity, perseverance, and a goal beyond the stars. Looking up into the sky, Isro's pioneering work serves as a reminder that space is a domain of opportunity for all of humanity, not just a frontier for a select few.
