India supports Pakistan’s resolution at UN panel, here’s why

Pakistan brought a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council against the incident of burning of the Holy Quran in Sweden. This draft proposal related to religious hatred has been approved on Wednesday. India also supported this proposal of Pakistan. Last month in Sweden’s capital Stockholm, a man insulted the Holy Quran in front of a mosque. The incident was condemned by the European Union, Pope Francis and the Swedish government itself, along with all Islamic countries.

Tweeted on behalf of UNHRC, ‘Draft resolution L.23 was orally amended once introduced. Its title is ‘Combating religious hatred promoting discrimination, hostility or violence’.

Pakistan had presented a draft resolution on behalf of the 57-nation organization OIC, which condemned the incidents of repeated public desecration of the Holy Quran in some European and other countries.

12 countries opposed the proposal

There are a total of 47 members in the UNHRC. Only 19 countries of OIC are in it. According to a Reuters report, some diplomats from western countries opposed the proposal. China supported Pakistan on this proposal. Twelve countries opposed the resolution, including the US, the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Lithuania, Costa Rica and Finland. Seven countries including Nepal abstained from voting on it. A total of 28 countries have supported it.

Pakistani newspaper gadgad

Pakistani newspaper Dawn termed the passing of the resolution as a major defeat for the western countries. Along with this it is written that OIC has dominance in UNHRC. US Permanent Representative to the UN Human Rights Council Michelle Taylor said US concerns about the initiative were not taken seriously. He said, ‘I believe that after an open discussion and given some time, we could have found a way to move forward together on this proposal.”
