India Vs Bharat: Local media in Pakistan are reporting that the nation may stake a claim to the name "India" amid the controversy surrounding a G20 dinner invitation that refers to President Droupadi Murmu as the "President of Bharat" rather than the "President of India" and the opposition's assertion that the Narendra Modi government is planning to change the name of India to Bharat.

Pakistan's Claim to 'India' Name Sparks Nationalist Controversy

A tweet from the X handle of South Asia Index read: "Pakistan may lay claim on name "India" if India derecongnises it officially at UN level. - local media." "Nationalists in Pakistan have long argued that Pakistan has rights on the name as it refers to Indus region in." In a previous tweet, the account stated that the Indian government planned to rename the nation from India to Bharat in an effort to "decolonize" India. It should be noted that the Indian government has not issued a formal declaration regarding the country's name change. The handle emphasised that Sanskrit is where the word Bharat originates.

Jinnah's Opposition to 'India' Name and the Debate Over 'Bharat'

"India refers to Indus region, basin of mighty Indus River, spanning much of modern day Pakistan," it read, adding, "Jinnah had objected to British India adopting "India" as its name for newly independent country & had suggested Hindustan or Bharat instead." Muhammed Ali Jinnah declined an invitation from Louis Mountbatten to serve as the honorary president of an art exhibition in 1947, a month after India gained its independence, because the invitation referred to India rather than Hindustan.  “It is a pity that for some mysterious reason Hindustan have adopted the word ‘India’ which is certainly misleading and is intended to create confusion,” Jinnah had then written to Mountbatten. In the tweet, South Asia Index added that the Indian rightwing has long hated the word "India." Sumitra Mahajan, a former speaker of the Lok Sabha, asserted that the country's initial name was "unquestionably" Bharat and that the British were responsible for the country's adoption of the name India.
