Indian Army in Transition: 108 women Army officers promoted to Colonel Rank

In a significant triumph for women officers, the Indian Army will begin the process of promoting 108 of them to the rank of Colonel on Monday (January 9). For the first time ever, female officers will be chosen for command positions in the Indian Army’s engineering, military intelligence, air defence, ordnance, and service departments.

It is a path breaking decision made by Indian Army, women are being given equal opportunities in all arms of service, and a women officer deployed at Siachin Glacier reflects a massive progressive mindset change in the Army which is revered as institution excellence among masses in our country.

According to officials, women are serving in the Indian Army’s numerous operational theatres with confidence and pride. In terms of treatment, women are treated equally to men. Also mentioned was the ongoing screening procedure for female officers to fill tenant leadership positions at the Colonel rank.

Women serve in various operational theatres of Indian Army

Indian Army has been implementing enlightened reforms , which are in tune with the trends which are shaping our society. Women officers are being empowered and it includes consideration of all Short Service Commission women officers for permanent commission.

In signs of change sweeping the Indian Army, as many as 20 vacancies have been earmarked for women cadets in a year for National Defence Academy. There are also 80 vacancies for SSC women officers in the Officers Training Academy. Direct commissioning of women officers to Flying Branch of Army Aviation Corps commenced from 2022.

Captain Shiva Chauhan from the Corps of Engineer broke the glass ceiling by being posted at Siachin Glacier, which is the highest battle field in the world. The Officer has been posted at Kumar post, located at an altitude of around 15,600 feet in Siachin, for a three month stint after she underwent rigorous training.

Her training included endurance, training, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue and survival skills.
