Sutanu Behuria, the president of the Bridge Federation of India, stated on Wednesday that the Indian delegation in Pakistan is completely safe and will continue to compete through May 13.
For a regional Bridge competition in Lahore, India sent a capable 32-person team.
In contrast to what the media has been reporting, Behuria told the Free Press Journal that false information is being circulated about the Indian team being stuck in Pakistan and being instructed by the High Commission to return home right away because of the situation there as a result of the former PM Imran Khan’s detention.
Indian bridge players in Pakistan are instructed to stay in the nation until the competition is over and are asked not to leave their hotel in Lahore. Since Khan’s arrest on Tuesday, violent protests have broken out all around the nation. Behuria, though, reassured that the Indian team is secure.
“It’s all fake news. They are safe in the hotel and Pakistani authorities have assured us of their security and safety.
“They (Indian players) are all mature people in their 60s. They will play out the entire tournament till May 13 and expected to win as well. They will be back once the tournament is over,” Mr Behuria told FPJ.
Pranab Bardhan, who won the men’s pair event at the 2018 Jakarta Games with his partner Shibhnath Sarkar, was one of the 32 contingents in the Indian Bridge team that competed at the Asian Games and won a gold medal.
The Arjuna Awardee was the frontrunner to win the competition at the BFAME Championship in 2023, and they also appreciated the tour of several locations in Lahore that the Pakistan Bridge Federation (PBF) had organised.
