Although there are various documents to prove identity, not every document can be used as valid proof of citizenship. Aadhaar, PAN and ration card are no longer valid documents for citizenship.

Documents Not Valid for Citizenship

According to authorities, Aadhaar, PAN and many other documents cannot be accepted as official proofs of citizenship in India. This decision has surprised many people of India. Documents like Aadhaar, PAN, and ration cards meet only administrative and welfare requirements and are not valid to prove citizenship.

Why This New Decision is Taken?

This decision is taken by the government as there was a need to increase the security and reliability of identity verification methods. The change seeks to simplify and confirm accuracy in recognizing real citizens of India. Delhi Police has ordered DCPs to intensify investigation on suspect individuals in their areas. The campaign against illegal immigrants will keep on till the last individual has been ousted. In the verification campaign, it was seen that many foreign citizens are living in India illegally, particularly Bangladeshis and Rohingyas. They were claiming Indian citizenship wrongly by using Aadhaar, PAN and ration cards. Beside this, Delhi Police has increased battle against Pakistani residents living in the capital. As per reports, nearby 3,500 Pakistanis are living in Delhi.
•    With rising cases of identity scam, the government is trying to strengthen the verification process.
•    By reducing the documents, the process becomes easier, proficient and convenient for officials.
•    This is part of comprehensive strategy to improve the reliability of citizenship certification

What are Valid Documents for Indian Citizenship?

Due to this change, it is vital to know which documents are now valid to prove citizenship in India. The government has updated the process, and is focusing on two critical documents: Passport and Voter ID Card.
The Delhi Police has made clear that only a Voter ID card or passport will now be recognised as proof of citizenship.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the police officer said, “Many illegal immigrants have been found possessing Aadhaar cards, ration cards, PAN cards and even cards issued by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). This made it difficult to accurately identify Indian citizens. Therefore, a Voter ID card or Indian passport has now been made mandatory."

Impact of new rule for citizenship in India

This new guidelines mean every Indian should make sure that his/her passport or voter ID card is available and correct and if not, updating should be done as early as possible. This will help to use various services and rights in India. Citizens should be active due to these changes. This will avoid troubles in verifying their identity and gaining many services.

As various foreigners are living in India illegally and also keep the documents like Aadhaar, PAN and ration cards, it is very necessary for government to update the process. Voter card and Passport are only valid documents in India now for the proof of citizenship.
