Planning international travel but your passport is about to expire? Don’t worry—renewing your Indian passport is now a streamlined process, both online and offline. Whether you're applying from a metro city or a remote district, the Ministry of External Affairs has simplified the steps for citizens to update their travel document with ease.

Indian passports are generally valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors. You can apply for renewal up to one year before the expiry or even after it expires. It’s important to apply early if your passport is nearing expiry, has run out of pages, is damaged, or has outdated information (like a change in name or address).

Document Checklist for Renewal

Before applying, make sure you have the following documents ready:

Original expired/expiring passport

Self-attested copies of the first and last pages of the passport

Address proof (Aadhaar, Voter ID, utility bill, etc.)

Two recent passport-sized photographs (if applying offline)

Annexure E (self-declaration form for no criminal record)

Old passport with ECNR or ECR status

If there is a change in address or personal details, supporting documents are also required

Online Application Process

Visit: passportindia.gov.in

Register/Login using your credentials

Select “Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport”

Fill in the required details, submit the application

Pay the applicable fee via debit/credit card or net banking

Schedule an appointment at the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)

On the appointment day, carry original documents for verification

Receive a tracking number to follow the status of your passport

Offline Application Option

For those not comfortable with online processes, you can also apply at the nearest District Passport Cell or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) with physical forms and documents.

Processing Time and Validity

Renewed passports are usually issued within 7-10 working days if police verification is not needed. In the case of changes in particulars or address, verification may take longer. Renewed passports for adults are valid for 10 years.

Stay updated and ensure your travel plans are not interrupted due to an expired passport.
