Indian Railways: In a major reform aimed at enhancing transparency and convenience in railway ticket booking, the Ministry of Railways has announced a new rule that will take effect from 1st October 2025. According to an official circular, during the first 15 minutes of the opening of general reservation, reserved tickets can now only be booked online through the IRCTC website or its mobile app by Aadhaar-authenticated users.
Indian Railways Introduces Aadhaar Authentication for Smooth Ticket Booking Experience
This step is part of the government’s efforts to ensure that the benefits of the reservation system reach genuine passengers and are not exploited by unauthorized agents or intermediaries. The decision will help streamline the process and promote digital governance, making it more user-friendly for the common public.
There will be no change in the existing timing for ticket bookings
Importantly, there will be no change in the existing timing for ticket bookings at computerized PRS counters of Indian Railways, nor in the 10-minute restriction during which authorized railway ticketing agents cannot book reserved tickets on the opening day.
The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC have been directed to make necessary system modifications and notify all Zonal Railways accordingly. The government is also committed to widely publicizing these changes to ensure passengers are well-informed.
This initiative reflects the government’s broader focus on digitization, security, and fair access to public services, aligning with the vision of a self-reliant and transparent India.
