Indian Railways has introduced strict baggage rules, similar to airlines, making it mandatory for passengers to follow weight limits on their luggage while traveling. Just like at airports, luggage will now be weighed at railway stations, and passengers exceeding the prescribed weight will have to pay additional charges.
The Railways has also clarified that random checks
According to the rules, each class of travel has its own luggage allowance. In First AC, a passenger is permitted to carry up to 70 kg free of cost, while Second AC passengers can carry 50 kg. In Sleeper Class, the free limit is 40 kg, and for Second Class, it is 35 kg. However, if luggage exceeds the prescribed weight, passengers must book it in advance as “luggage” and pay extra fees accordingly.

Officials explained that this rule has always existed, but now strict enforcement will begin to prevent inconvenience and overloading. The Railways has also clarified that random checks and weighing may be conducted at stations, especially on premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express.
Railway authorities stated that the move is aimed at ensuring passenger safety, better weight management of trains, and smoother travel experiences. Passengers are urged to be mindful of baggage limits to avoid last-minute hassles.
