Indian Student from Gujarat Charged with Triple Murder of Grandparents and Uncle in US, Arrested

In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old Indian student is taken into custody and charged with the murders of his uncle and grandparents in a New Jersey condominium.

Gujarat: According to US media reports and police, a 23-year-old Indian student has been detained and charged with the murder of his grandparents and uncle inside a condominium in New Jersey. The South Plainfield Police Department, the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and Dilipkumar Brahmbhatt, 72, Bindu Brahmbhatt, 72, and Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, 38, are all accused of being shot by Om Brahmbhatt.

Disturbing Discovery at Traditions Condo Complex

According to a press release from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, officers were called to the residence on Coppola Drive off New Durham Road in South Plainfield at approximately nine in the morning on Monday. The neighbour had reportedly heard gunfire at the Traditions condo complex. Officers discovered three victims of gunshot wounds upon arrival: two men and a woman.

Fatal Injuries

Police said that married couple Dilipkumar and Bindu Brahmbhatt were discovered shot to death in the apartment on the second floor. It was also discovered that their son, Yashkumar Brahmbhatt, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. After being brought to the hospital, he passed away. A suspect was apprehended and questioned on the spot before being charged. Om was accused of possessing a weapon in the second degree and of first-degree murder on three occasions. Gujarat-born Om lived with the victims and was discovered at the house when the police got there.

New Jersey Relocation

Om had recently relocated to New Jersey, according to sources, and had been residing at the condo, as reported by NBC New York. He was brought to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Centre pending a pre-trial detention hearing; his attorney’s identity was not immediately apparent, and there was no listing for him. The complaint claims that Om used a handgun that he had ordered online to commit the crime. During his court appearance on Tuesday, Om appeared composed. He dialled 911 that morning, according to police, and when asked who it might have been, Om allegedly said, “It might be me.”

Previous Police Involvement

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were unclear. It wasn’t the first time police had been called to the condo, a neighbour told NBC New York. Jim Short, a neighbour who lives upstairs from the apartment where the three bodies were discovered, said, “I didn’t really know them, I just know one time the police were there for a domestic violence call. Can happen anywhere but it is really creepy, it’s right downstairs.”

Neighbour’s Observation

Many young families who immigrated from India live in the Traditions apartment complex, which has dozens of security cameras installed in an effort to aid law enforcement, according to the neighbours. “There’s cameras all over and there are cameras coming in and out of the complex and every building has cameras outside and inside the breezeway. So hopefully that can help,” said another neighbour, Victor Orozco.

Public Safety Assurance

The South Plainfield Police Department is in charge of an ongoing investigation. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Javier Morillo and South Plainfield Detective Thomas Rutter conducted an investigation that led them to the conclusion that there was no public threat and that this was not an isolated act of violence.
