India’s rail network is poised for another major upgrade with the launch of the country’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, scheduled to begin operations in September 2025. The announcement was made by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during a recent event in Gujarat, signaling a significant leap forward in overnight rail travel.
The sleeper version of the semi-high-speed Vande Bharat series is designed to combine speed, comfort, and convenience — aimed especially at long-distance overnight travelers. It will offer premium facilities typically found in modern air travel, reimagined for the Indian railway experience.
Built for Speed and Comfort
According to NDTV Auto, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is being manufactured by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited), in collaboration with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The 16-coach rake will include a mix of AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier coaches. It is expected to operate at a top speed of 180 km/h, drastically reducing travel time on major routes.
Key Features Onboard the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
The train promises a suite of modern amenities tailored for a luxurious yet practical rail journey:
- Real-time passenger information screens to keep travelers updated.
- USB charging ports with personal reading lamps at every berth.
- Modular pantry units designed to serve fresh meals.
- Hot water showers available in First AC coaches.
- Touch-free bio-vacuum toilets for enhanced hygiene.
- Accessible berths and washrooms for differently-abled passengers.
- Talk-back assistance units for emergency support.
- CCTV surveillance throughout the train for added safety.
- Sensor-based gangway doors between coaches for seamless movement.
A Game Changer for Overnight Rail Travel
The Vande Bharat Sleeper variant represents a key shift in how India envisions future rail services — not just faster, but smarter and safer. With its upgraded design and focus on passenger comfort, it is expected to be a preferred choice for long-distance travel over conventional express trains.
The introduction of the sleeper model also aligns with Indian Railways’ broader push to modernize its fleet and infrastructure under the “Make in India” initiative. The upcoming months will likely see trial runs and route announcements, with the first service expected to roll out this September.
