India’s Growing Influence! US Issues 1.4 Million Visas in 2023, Appointment Wait Time Reduced 75 Percent

Breaking Records: US Grants 1.4 Million Visas in 2023, Fueled by Indian Applicants

In a remarkable feat, the US Consular Team in India processed a staggering 1.4 million US visas in 2023, marking a significant milestone. This surge in visa applications has not only shattered previous records but has also led to a substantial reduction in visitor visa appointment wait times, down by 75 percent. Indians, in particular, have emerged as a prominent demographic, constituting one-tenth of all US visa applicants worldwide.

Unprecedented Demand: A Surge in Visa Applications

The year 2023 witnessed an unprecedented surge in visa applications, with a remarkable 60 percent increase compared to the previous year. Visitor visas (B1/B2) have notably rebounded, accounting for over 700,000 applications, the second-highest in the US Mission’s history. Thanks to process enhancements and staffing investments, the appointment wait time for visitor visas has been slashed from an average of 1,000 days to a mere 250 days across the country.

Student Visa Dominance: Indian Scholars Shine Bright

Setting records for the third consecutive year, the US consular team in India issued over 140,000 student visas in 2023, surpassing all other countries globally. Notably, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai emerged as the top four student visa processing hubs worldwide. This trend has propelled Indian students to become the largest cohort of international graduate students in the United States, constituting over a quarter of the one million foreign students enrolled.

Priority on Employment Visas: Streamlined Processes

Employment visas remain a top priority for the US Consular Team in India. By consolidating petition-based visa processing in Chennai and Hyderabad, efficiency has been significantly boosted. Over 380,000 employment visas for Indians and their families were processed in 2023, maintaining minimal appointment wait times. Additionally, a pilot program has been initiated to enable eligible H1B holders to renew their visas within the United States, further simplifying the process.

Investing in the Future: Enhanced Consular Services

The US Embassy and Consulates in India continue to invest in advancing consular services and enhancing convenience for applicants. These efforts include the inauguration of a new USD 340 million facility in Hyderabad, the announcement of two new consulates in Ahmedabad and Bangalore, ongoing capital improvements across facilities, and the deployment of additional consular officers to India. These initiatives underscore a commitment to providing efficient and seamless visa services to applicants across the country.
